And for those of you who may not have read Jaded (yet) and been introduced to the lead character of Lonely Heart, here’s the a quick peek at the Prologue to Kaitlyn Rodgers story…..

Prologue

“Kaity, are you sure this is what you want?”

A final scan of the room showed nothing left behind. “Yes, Ebony, I’m positive. Luke made it clear; he doesn’t want this baby, which means he doesn’t want me.”

After months of failed attempts to convince my boyfriend of nearly two years keeping our family together was best, I had enough.  The moment he learned about the pregnancy, he suggested abortion. After arguing, he conceded to try and work things out. Everything went fine for a while, but the more I asked him to participate in the doctor’s appointments and for ideas about setting up the baby’s room, the more standoffish he became.

His decision to avoid the sonogram and ignore my calls and text messages was enough.

I had three months until my baby’s arrival.

My baby…Who’d have thought I’d become a single mom?

A few short months ago, my life was perfect. I worked my dream job and had a man who loved me.

Tunes out I was wrong about that.

I made some bad decisions in my life, but it was too late to change them now.

For the next three months my focus would be providing my baby with a happy home.  And regardless of what Luke thought, he would still have responsibility in providing for his child.

“That’s everythin’. Let’s get out of here before he gets home.”

#SampleSunday- Love, Trust, and Secrets

The reality of relationships is there will always be secrets. Sometimes it’s good to keep a secret, sometimes it isn’t. What happens when  the truth comes out? Can a couple who seem to have the perfect relationship find their way back to happiness after their ability to trust each another has been tested?

Some secrets are worse than infidelity…

Excerpt:

Why didn’t I think about this before?

I was so stupid.

I pushed the button on my phone and brought the screen saver to life. An image of our wedding day appeared. Zack stood behind me, his hands wrapped around my waist possessively. Smiles of contentment, love, and joy were on our faces.

Four days of wedded bliss felt as if it happened a million years ago.

How were we ever going to find that feeling again?

I said a brief prayer, then sent Zack another text apologizing and begging him to come home. The chances of him replying to the text were greater than expecting him to answer the phone.

After all, he wasn’t sure how he felt about me.

I had to remain positive. Negativity already permeated our relationship.

I had to believe he would forgive me. I had to believe my husband would return to me.

#8SundaySample- The Morning After

It seems I’ve been talking about sex a lot on my blog over the last few weeks, and with good reason. Those scenes can be the most fun to write! In fact, once I’ve gone through my process of outlining the story and developing the characters, it’s often the first scene that comes to mind…but not for the reason you my think.

Every love scene in my novels is there for a reason, and no, I don’t get carried away with adding them for the sake of  word count. When my characters take that step, its because something has changed between them, and that change moves the story forward. So of course the ‘morning after’ is just as important as the events that led up to a night of passion.

In Jaded, the first time the lead characters, Yasmine and Zachariah, come together, it is as friends…with benefits. Believe me, it’s not something either of them jump into, especially since both were left jaded and broken due to past relationships. After everything is said and done, Zachariah takes the time to study Yasmine as she sleeps, and discovers something about her that makes him see her once again in a whole new light….

Excerpt:

And damn, even her manicured toes were sexy.

Yasmine shifted in her sleep; the sigh of a satisfied lover escaped. Then her eyes opened and I knew exactly what captivated me.

It wasn’t the color or the sexy cat-like shape. It was the emotion, the soul hidden deep within the grey mist, hiding what she didn’t want the world to know. She used her mind, quick wit, and sexuality to hide her feelings.

I could see well beyond the sexy exterior, past the hurt, past the pain, and into the heart of who she truly was.

A woman who wanted to love – and be loved.

I Got Reviewed by The Masquerade Crew and Survived!!!!!!

Now, where is my t-shirt?!?!?!?!?

Okay, I am letting out a deep breath now. For weeks I’ve been anxiously checking my Twitter feed for the tweet to notify me the review for A Heart Not Easily Broken was posted. For those of you who may not know, The Masquerade Crew is one of the biggest book review sites on the web.

Big as in over 19,000 followers on Twitter, 452 followers on Google+, 859 likes on Facebook and oh yeah, according to the counter at the bottom of their page this morning, an average of over 16,800 site views in the past 7 days!

And when it comes to book reviews, these guys pull no punches and are brutally honest. So, needless to say, responding to a call of Romance novels to be reviewed was a leap of faith.  I had to sit and think long and hard before submitting my debut novel, not sure of how this could either help or hurt me, because in the end, like I mentioned before, see the number of social networking contacts? Yeah…one bad review and there’d be no hiding it….period.

Well, I awoke this morning and discovered this tweet in my Twitter stream….

IMG_0757[1]

3.7?!?!?!?!

I am going to OWN THAT BAD BOY LIKE YOU WOULDN’T BELIEVE!!!!

Like I said before, these guys don’t hold back and from what I’ve seen, it’s hard to get past a 3 on their rating scale, and according to their review policy, a 3.5 and up is a 4 on Amazon and Goodreads! So best believe, I am doing the happy dance right now!!

I loved the way the reviewer described what she liked about the main characters, Ebony and Brian, and how she felt the subject matter was handled. The portions she did mention could use a little fixing are nothing new, as in a few reviewers have said it before. Remember when I posted a few weeks ago about learning from your reviews (Book Reviews: The Good, The Bad and the WTH?!?!)? Well, trust me, the comments that were made have been addressed when writing the second novel in the series, Jaded. I haven’t seen similar comments made in any of it’s reviews which is a good thing! I listen to what my reviews are telling me, and while I may not be able to back track and change what’s already been done, I do make a contentious effort to correct it in the next book. As any author I’ve talked to and I’m sure any author will tell you, each book is a learning experience, a chance to become a better writer than you were in the last one. Listen to your reviewers, listen to your readers, and grow…your audience and fan base will grow with you.

So with that said, I say a very heartfelt THANK YOU to my reviewer over at The Masquerade Crew for giving  my DEBUT NOVEL, first book written EVER such an awesome review! Stop by and check it out, my friends!

A Heart Not Easily Broken(Butterfly Memories) by M.J.Kane

I received this wonderful review for A Heart Not Easily Broken on Amazon yesterday…after a long day, it made me smile. Reviews like this remind me that taking the time and putting in the hard work can pay off in the end. There’s nothing an author wants more than a happy reader! Thank you! 🙂

“This was my first time reading a book by M.J. Kane and I loved it. This book was so different from other IR books. Most IR books make you think that the couple’s relationship is fine and nobody has a problem seeing it. We live in the real world and no that that is not true. This author shows you the issues that the couples are really faced with. It may be complete strangers or even your friends and family that have a problem with it. I was glad that Ebony and Brian’s love was able to overcome the obstacles. Now I’m ready to read book #2.”

If you haven’t read A Heart Not Easily Broken, or the next Butterfly Memoir in the series, Jaded, visit this link to learn more about the series and the books. Hang out for a little while and read the First Chapters, check out the Character Bio’s, Diary Post, and Deleted Scenes!

Have a wonderful weekend!

#8Sunday- Jaded (Book 2 of The Butterfly Memoirs) and the winners of the JADED BLOG TOUR!

This week I am jumping around a bit in the text to highlight some of my favorite moments. I am so excited from the feedback I continue to get from readers! I am extra excited that A Heart Not Easily Broken and Jaded have both been designated Book Of The Month of one of my favorite Facebook book clubs, Building Relationships Around Books! I am looking forward to the book discussion that will be held there later this month. If you love reading and are passionate about talking about your favorite books, latest read, or life in general, check out this group!

Now, on to this weeks fun sample:

He retrieved the toast, added butter and jelly, and then handed me a plate. Orange juice followed. He stood at the island counter top across from me as we ate, the same happy expression on his face, but when our eyes met, a devilish expression lit his eyes.

I had the feeling suggesting we meet later for the ‘non date’ would not be a good idea. But it was too late to turn back now. This was never put into the rules so we weren’t breaking them…just, doing something different. As friends.

Maybe if I kept telling myself that I would believe it.

#SampleSunday- The Jaded Hero

The fun part about writing is developing the characters. In a series, you struggle to keep the reoccurring character’s voice the same, yet give it a life of its own.  When writing a new male character, you want him to be strong and sure like your previous hero – you know, the one every female reader fell in love with – yet he has to be different. Well for Jaded, Zachariah Givens does the trick.

If you’ve meet Yasmine Phillips, you know she has a strong personality. In A Heart Not Easily Broken, she never hesitates to tell her friends exactly what type of man or relationship she’s looking for.  She appears to be happy, then just like that, her dreams evaporate, leaving her heart broken and wary. She’s unsure of her finding a man who will ever love her.

So I asked myself…when a woman has been hurt like that, what type of man would it take to convince her to love again?

My answer: the complete opposite of what she’s used to.

Zachariah is a little older, a loner, and very intelligent. He’s good with his hands and is a technological wiz who can tear electronic equipment down and fix it with his eyes closed. No, he is not a gamer or a nerd. He prefers to sit back and observe people and what goes on around him.  He thinks before he opens his mouth.

I think Yasmine put it best when she says, “He held a quiet confidence that was never to be boasted.”

Zachariah also has some personal issues to overcome, first and foremost, trusting another woman with his heart. Like Yasmine, he too has been jaded.

Here’s an excerpt from his point of view…the quiet, yet very passionate hero:

Excerpt:

Over the past year, my life had turned into nothing but wide-open space and emptiness.

Life was perfect when Melissa and I bought the condo. She found the place just as it went on the market. The loft was part of a warehouse converted into loft condominiums and featured a great view of the city. It was on the outskirts of town, thirty minutes from anywhere, as long as traffic wasn’t too bad.

Large windows ate an entire wall, leaving magnificent views, and plenty of natural light, day or night. I loved the open floor plan of the living room, dining room, and kitchen all in one area with no walls to separate it. A small half bath hid beneath stairs leading up to the open bedroom and master bathroom.

My eyes traveled up from where I stood in the kitchen to the rail that marked the end of the bedroom. Visions of Melissa wearing lingerie to entice came to mind. One look at what she wore and I would be upstairs in a heartbeat.

Back then, the place was full of furniture, life, laughter, and love.

Melissa liked to decorate. Nearly every paycheck she brought home went towards something new to make this place ours. If electronics were my vice, shopping and decorating were hers. I didn’t mind because I made enough to pay the bills.

Man, she knew how to make a house a home. Pictures, flowers …everything modern and clean.

When she decided she didn’t want to wait around to see if my mother lived or died, she cleaned the place out, taking everything except for the bed and kitchen table. Guess those items were too big to move.
