#SampleSunday- Love, Trust, and Secrets

The reality of relationships is there will always be secrets. Sometimes it’s good to keep a secret, sometimes it isn’t. What happens when  the truth comes out? Can a couple who seem to have the perfect relationship find their way back to happiness after their ability to trust each another has been tested?

Some secrets are worse than infidelity…

Excerpt:

Why didn’t I think about this before?

I was so stupid.

I pushed the button on my phone and brought the screen saver to life. An image of our wedding day appeared. Zack stood behind me, his hands wrapped around my waist possessively. Smiles of contentment, love, and joy were on our faces.

Four days of wedded bliss felt as if it happened a million years ago.

How were we ever going to find that feeling again?

I said a brief prayer, then sent Zack another text apologizing and begging him to come home. The chances of him replying to the text were greater than expecting him to answer the phone.

After all, he wasn’t sure how he felt about me.

I had to remain positive. Negativity already permeated our relationship.

I had to believe he would forgive me. I had to believe my husband would return to me.

#8SundaySample- The Morning After

It seems I’ve been talking about sex a lot on my blog over the last few weeks, and with good reason. Those scenes can be the most fun to write! In fact, once I’ve gone through my process of outlining the story and developing the characters, it’s often the first scene that comes to mind…but not for the reason you my think.

Every love scene in my novels is there for a reason, and no, I don’t get carried away with adding them for the sake of  word count. When my characters take that step, its because something has changed between them, and that change moves the story forward. So of course the ‘morning after’ is just as important as the events that led up to a night of passion.

In Jaded, the first time the lead characters, Yasmine and Zachariah, come together, it is as friends…with benefits. Believe me, it’s not something either of them jump into, especially since both were left jaded and broken due to past relationships. After everything is said and done, Zachariah takes the time to study Yasmine as she sleeps, and discovers something about her that makes him see her once again in a whole new light….

Excerpt:

And damn, even her manicured toes were sexy.

Yasmine shifted in her sleep; the sigh of a satisfied lover escaped. Then her eyes opened and I knew exactly what captivated me.

It wasn’t the color or the sexy cat-like shape. It was the emotion, the soul hidden deep within the grey mist, hiding what she didn’t want the world to know. She used her mind, quick wit, and sexuality to hide her feelings.

I could see well beyond the sexy exterior, past the hurt, past the pain, and into the heart of who she truly was.

A woman who wanted to love – and be loved.

Jaded is here, and the Reviews are Coming In!!!!

As I write this blog, it is Saturday night, a little over twenty-four hours since Jaded was published, and the reviews are already coming in!  I am NOT complaining! Since Saturday morning I have been contacted by readers by way of direct messages on Facebook with their on the spot comments about the story.  And I can’t help but wonder….Who went to bed Friday night? 🙂 One reader told me she was mad because she got so caught up and couldn’t put it down. She stayed up all night and had just finished! I got that message at 8:30 in the morning.

So, instead of sharing another sample of Jaded this week, I decided share the reviews that have come in today! Thank you guys!!!!! You have made my weekend! Now go to sleep!

5.0 out of 5 stars I Loved it!, March 23, 2013
Amazon Verified Purchase(What’s this?)

Yasmine and Zack’s story is beautifully written and I couldn’t have not asked for except for it not to end. This story was a very emotional read for me I cried because it was very touching. Two people who were hurt by love and afraid of it but choosing to be there for each other friends. The concept of friends falling in love is not new to romance writing but the way this story is written is very unique and wonderful. The way that Zack always seemed to know what Yasmine needed him, he was the best friend that she could ask for. I also liked the reappearance of Ebony and Kaitlyn and I look forward to reading what happens Kaitlyn next. Good job M.J. Kane you did a great job of writing about two people who were afraid of love finding it again.

Book Two of this series was well worth the wait! Zack and Yasmine story is up next and you are truly in for one heck of a treat. Both Zack and Yasmine are damage goods from previous relationship and both afraid to take a chance on love again. This story touches on topics like trust, love, acceptance and death and when M.J. put them all together you get a beautifully written love story. The story line to Jaded was truly amazing and this book is definitely a page turner. Very nicely done M.J. and I look forward to the next installment….

#SampleSunday- Jaded- Book Two of The Butterfly Memoirs Cover Reveal

Okay, guys, I have been sitting on this for the past month, waiting anxiously to share the cover of the next (and anticipated!) book release in The Butterfly Memoirs series, Jaded. Now it’s time!

If you’ve read any of my past blogs, you know how I feel about book covers. They can do many things; depict the characters in the story, show a scene from the book, or incite emotion and curiosity for what lies beneath the covers (or pixels depending on what format you prefer).

I love symbolism.  It makes you think, gets your mind wondering. It stimulates your imagination and makes you curious to see if your own ideas match the story.

I received a lot of wonderful feedback about the cover for A Heart Not Easily Broken. There were a lot of readers who loved the fact there were no people caught up in the throes of passion, while others appreciated discovering the characters without having an idea of what lay within until reading the reviews.

Well, guess what? I’m doing it again!

Ladies and Gentlemen, the cover for Jaded…..

Autumn landscape

A devastating breakup leaves Yasmine Phillips in shambles. Unable to trust another man with her heart, she focuses on the one thing she can control—starting her own business.

When her computer crashes, taking months of hard work with it, she must rely on computer genius Zachariah Givens to save her. A complete opposite of men from her past, she doesn’t expect the passion that ensues. But just as she finds happiness, she learns the truth about the other women in Zachariah’s life.

In the next few weeks I’ll start sharing Jaded in my #SampleSunday post. There will also be ‘conversational’ post based on the topics addressed in the book. Stay tuned to learn more about Yasmine Phillips! If you don’t know who she is or what events led to her story, grab a copy of A Heart Not Easily Broken,  Book one of The Butterfly Memoirs and you’ll find out! For now, enjoy this brief look into Yasmine’s Diary:

Prologue

Dear Diary,

They call me, Slut, ‘ho, easy… and a few other words that I refuse to even write on paper.

Since middle school, people have taken one look at my light skin, grey eyes, and the shape of my body and assumed that’s who I was.

Assume.

The first three letters of the word described them. How dare they judge me? Nobody is perfect.

It has never mattered what I’ve done in my life. Being the daughter of a bi-racial marriage has always haunted me. With my fusion of  graceful features I’d inherited from my white mother, the slender nose, cat-like eyes, vibrant smile, -and the take-no-shit attitude of my black father, people didn’t know how to deal with me.

Guys in school wanted to date me as if I were a trophy. Girls hated the color of my eyes and the texture of my hair.

Things got worse as I got older. Why? Because I love my body and I love sex.

But I never used either to earn money or favors from any man. I am a confident, educated woman who goes for what I want, regardless of what anyone around me has to say. If that means I want a good lay every now and then, I’m damn well entitled to it. But one thing I’d never be is a home wrecker.

My philosophy on love and relationships is simple, sex isn’t love, but it’s nice while you’re waiting.

Well, that’s what I used to think before the man I fell in love with trampled all over my heart.

And raped my best friend.

Love will never happen for me. No man will ever understand me. The real me.

Not my parents, not my brother, not even my best friends.

My life, my experiences – both good and bad – are what define the real me.

Yasmine
