#SampleSunday-A Pissed Off Woman is Hard to Handle

Last week’s Sample Sunday was an excerpt of A Heart Not Easily Broken, where Brian Young wasted no time putting his best friend on notice about his feelings for Ebony Campbell. This week, I want to share ‘staking your claim’ from a woman’s point of view…and feisty Yasmine Phillips from Jaded is just the one to do it.

In this week’s sample, Yasmine is in the middle of conflicted feelings about her friend, Zachariah Givens. What started off as a friends-with-benefits relationship has morphed into a deeper set of feelings…at least on her end. Unsure of how to proceed, she is trying not to misinterpret a kiss they shared in the kitchen before they were interrupted by an over enthusiastic visitor…. Zack’s ex-fiance. The wall hiding her from view doesn’t stop the confrontation from being overheard…

Excerpt:

“You were embarrassed? I was making sure my mother’s health was taken care of, and my fiancée, my girlfriend of the last two years, left me weeks before the wedding and moved back in with her ex-boyfriend. You chose to leave, Melissa. I didn’t do anything to deserve the way you treated me or our relationship.”

“What else was I supposed to do? You didn’t want me anymore.”

“What the…why would you think that? Of course I did.”

Melissa pouted. “You stopped coming home at night. You didn’t let me know what was going on. What else was I supposed to think?”

Zack huffed and threw his hands up in what appeared to be disgust. He stepped away from the door and ran a hand over his face. “That’s a lie. I asked for your help, but you always had some excuse. I told you every day what was going on. My mother’s wellbeing wasn’t your concern. Your focus was on how much we had to pay for the damn place settings for the dining room table.”

There was silence for a moment. I hoped his response would be enough to make her leave. Without warning, she smiled, stepped closer to Zack, and pushed him against the wall. Her hands were all over him.

“Stop, Melissa.” He deflected her attempt to kiss him and pushed her away.

“Come on, Zack, it’s time we let the past go. Your mom is fine. I was wrong for not helping…let me make it up to you.” Her head cocked to the side as her voice took on a whiney quality. “I’ve missed you, baby. We were always good at this…” Her hand trailed down his chest and grabbed the front of his sweat pants.

Okay. That was it.

I unfastened my jeans and kicked them off before unhooking the first few buttons of my shirt. I ran fingers through my hair leaving it disheveled.

“Zack…,” I put on my most seductive walk and headed to the door.

His eyes focused on me and traveled down my naked legs to the unbuttoned part of my shirt that left little to the imagination. He licked his lips.

Melissa froze and stared at me.

Now she knew why he had a hard-on.

“Who is she?” Melissa spat.

Zack opened his mouth to reply, but I cut him off.

“I’m the woman who’s taking care of everything he needs.” My eyes cut to where her hand gripped Zack. “Get your hands off my man.” I allowed every ounce of hatred and jealousy to be evident in my voice.

Her eyes narrowed. “Excuse me?”

I walked over and stood next to Zack, ignoring the confused expression on his face. I looked down; Melissa’s hand hadn’t moved. I cocked an eyebrow and sucked my teeth.

She dropped her hand and stepped away without uttering a word.

I stood in front of Zack and staked my claim. “Now, if I heard right, he doesn’t want or need you.” Her perfect lips opened as if to argue. I stuck my manicured nail in her face. “If you want to keep that cheap lace front wig for the next man you want to seduce, keep your mouth shut and leave before it ends up on the floor.”

Melissa stared at me, then angled her head so she could see Zack. Since he stood behind me, I had no idea what expression was on his face. Whatever it was, it forced her mouth shut.

She smirked while studying me. “Well, Zack, I see you’ve found a little playmate. She must not be as good as me or else you wouldn’t have answered the door.”

“What the…oh hell no!” I reached out for that stupid wig, but she slipped out of my grasp and into the hallway. Zack grabbed my waist, drew me in the door, and kicked it shut.

Nicole Dunlap holds a Bachelors Degree in Psychology and Child Development, and a Masters Degree in Educational Counseling from Azusa Pacific University–mantra Jesus first. She counsels in the inner city of San Bernardino; motivating teens dealing with depression, pregnancy, gang membership and abuse. She has been self dubbed the “gumbo genre” novelist, because books shouldn’t be lightly seasoned… Her stories revolve around family and relationships, women’s issues, drizzled with drama, peppered with suspense, and finished off with aromatic notes of romance. The Shaw Family Saga pays homage to dysfunctional mother-daughter relationships, with well developed characters that readers can root for; love them, hate them, cry for, and most of all, yearn to flip through the pages to the end of that character’s journey.

#Loving Day Blog Hop: True Love Sees No Color, No Bounds

When I decided to write my first novel, I was nervous. I had never written anything other than a thirty page FanFic, and the idea of writing a complete story, especially one that involved love scenes, scared me. Yet, my Muse would not let me give up. So, I grabbed a laptop and started writing.

I knew from the beginning my heroine would be a black woman who was goal-oriented, lived clear across country from where she grew up, an was not looking for or in need of romance. I knew there would be a traumatic experience that would change her life and force her to question her ability to continue on the path she’d laid out for herself. What I did not know was what type of man would convince her to fall in love with him and have the ability to support her in all things, even when he does not realize there is a problem.

Being an African-American woman, you would think the hero would be a black man.

My Muse saw things differently.

I remember sitting on my bed writing the chapter in which Ebony Campbell first meets the hero. Now, mind you, this was in 2009 and the story was in its infant stages. The original scene had her and her friends at the beach when she meets a really handsome black man whom she flirts with. During the course of their conversation, his roommate approaches and the two characters are introduced. Brian Young is a blond haired, blue-eyed, white man with a devilishly handsome smile and cocky attitude. Something about him at that moment caught Ebony’s eye, and more importantly, my imagination.

Three years, and many revisions later, the black man that originally caught Ebony’s attention faded into the background, and Brian Young, rooted himself in both of our hearts. Thus, my decision to write Interracial Romance began.

I have not been in an interracial relationship, but I am a firm believer that love has no bounds. Skin color should not be the determining factor as to whether or not you allow yourself to be attracted to another person, nor fear of racial differences.  While family and friends have the ability to influence our decisions, it is up to us to decide what will make us happy. I tell my children if they fall in love with someone who is not black, the only thing that will concern me will be whether or not that person is good to them, loves them, and makes them happy…race does not matter.

Easier said than done, right? Even in 2013, when interracial dating is politically correct and a lot of people with raciest attitudes are dying off (as one fan who has read my book told me, lol) people’s thoughts about IR relationships behind closed doors still exist.

While writing A Heart Not Easily Broken, I researched couples who are in interracial relationships, read articles, books, questioned a few people I knew who were in relationships or the children of  IR couples. I imagined what my reactions would be like if I were Ebony, realistic reactions, not ones that are politically correct. I researched the marriage statistics of interracial couples (black women/white men to be exact) in different areas of the country. I watched couples in the city where I live. I say all of this because I wanted to be sure the story I wrote  focused on Ebony and Brian’s relationship realistically and not ignore or make up situations that would not ring true.

A Heart Not Easily Broken is a story about more than a black woman and white man struggling to be together. It is a story about two people from different backgrounds who recognize love when they find it. Yes, there are some issues the heroine faces because her upbringing is far different from Brian’s. She’s from the South where regardless of what we see on TV, the news, or any other media source, negative influences from family and friends still happen. Though it’s not as negative as it was in the past, it almost an unspoken thing that a young black woman knows bringing a white man home to momma may not go over very well. Despite the fact Ebony is a grown woman who has lived in California for the past seven years, it does not take away from her personal fear that her parents may not support her decision to be with Brian. As their relationship grows, Ebony’s fear dissipates and leads to a love that she never imagined existed.

I am proud to say A Heart Not Easily Broken has received over 80 5-Star Reviews from Amazon, Goodreads, and Barnes & Noble readers. My biggest compliment came a few weeks ago by a reviewer who said her child is in an interracial relationship and she could relate to the experiences had by Brian and Ebony.

#8Sunday- How do you like YOUR man?

Every woman her idea of the ‘Perfect Man’. Some want men who remind them of their fathers. Some prefer the Bad Boy’, and others, ‘The Geek’.

What type of man attracts Ebony Campbell? Listen in as she muses about the eye candy at the night club she’s hanging out at with her friends.

Excerpt:

He was attractive all right, but not the physical type I preferred. I was attracted to men who were tall, had thick lips, and eyes that peered into the depths of my soul. A man with the body of a sex machine, yet had no problem working hard for a living and wasn’t afraid to get his hands dirty.

One of the first things I noticed about a man was not his shoe size, but his hands. If they were too pretty and soft, the man didn’t believe in hard work. If they were overly calloused with visible dirt under the nails and full of scrapes and bruises, those were signs that a man didn’t take care of the little things, which meant the rest of him would be questionable. Now, a man with hands somewhere in between, calloused from work with no traces of dirt under his nails, those were signs of a hardworking man who could clean up nice. Everywhere.

#8Sunday- Looking good isn’t always comfortable!

Have you ever let your girlfriends talk you into wearing an outfit that wasn’t your style? The night Ebony meets Brian, that ‘little  black dress’ is magic…as soon as she gets comfortable that is!

Excerpt:

“Stop fidgeting. You look uncomfortable,” she added, winking at the bartender who handed us our drinks.

No matter how many times I adjusted the hem of my dress, it was impossible to ignore the warm air tickling the backs of my thighs as people pushed past me in the crowded bar. It would take more fabric to keep my shapely derriere from involuntary exposure.

“Thanks.” I slipped money into the bartender’s tip jar, and he rewarded me with a gorgeous smile. “For the record, I am uncomfortable.” I turned to face Yasmine. “Freakum dresses are your thing, not mine.”

#WriterWednesday- Interview with Erotic Kookie!

Welcomr back for this weeks author interview! Today I’d like to introduce you to Erotic Kookie. She is a poet and author I meet when she was doing a local book signing. Her stories are about romance with a mixture of erotica and a little bit more…

Picture of meKLT

Welcome, Erotic Kookie!

Wordsmiths Interview Questioner

Thank you for taking the time to answer these questions. Don’t forget to send a photo, cover of your latest book, a brief book blurb, and where you can be reached in cyberspace!

What inspired you to write?

My Inspiration came from me being very quiet as a child. I began writing poetry when I was in grade school, you know the classic, rose are red violets are blue.  Poetry allowed self-expression through the power of word play. As I grew older, I noticed that adding just the right touch of spice awakened the senses; mind body soul and spirit. Writing poetry led to short stories and from there writing novels.

What genre do you write? Did you choose it, or did it choose you?

I write everything from inspirational poetry to erotic poetry and novels.  I will have to say that it chose me.  When I write something inspirational, it feels like it comes from a higher power and I am just a vessel delivering the message.  When it comes to erotica, my inner sensual Goddess emerges and she takes the wheel.  She loves to spread love and teach people how erotica can help spark great romance, intimacy and ignite passion and desire that has been trapped within.

What is your work schedule like when you’re writing?

My schedule is always hectic, so trying to balance work, family, and writing can be a bit challenging at times, but I noticed when it came to carving out a  time to write, I did it better late at night when everything is  more quiet and serene.

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

Hmmm, let’s see, I will put on a hat if the character is wearing or even spray perfume to set the tone. Sometimes I repeat a song over and over while writing a scene.

Are you a pantser or plotter?

I would have to say that I’m a bit of both. As a writer you may have a story in your head, but as it begins to unfold, depending on the story, it can lead to spicier thoughts (in my case) and add a little more zest to your characters.

Are your stories based on experiences based on someone you know, or are events in your own life reflected in the characters/stories you write? Can you share and example?

Yes, my stories are definitely a mixture based on true life events, life experiences; things I’ve witnessed or may have been told and of course embellished to add just the right amount of spice. Being in a long term relationship taught me so many life experiences, like being caught up in the emotions of love and expecting a person to change for love and the betterment of the relationship, not realizing at the time that people have to be willing be accountable for their own action and then be willing to change. I became a victim to lies, deceit and betrayal, something many can identify with. I’ve also, lived through and seen verbal and physical abuse, which we all know can be a deadly combination. Through it all, I have become a stronger, wiser woman and have in turn helped others in the same or similar situations. This is why you will not only read Just a Little Bit More an Erotic Elixir, you will also experience it.

Do you have any suggestions to help new authors become a better writer? If so, what are they?

My suggestions would be stay true to yourself and understand that you cannot please everyone, find your niche and your target audience will come. Also know that there is a lot of hard work and dedication that comes along with writing and publishing a book. Do it, because you love it and it’s your passion, not for money.

Are you self-pubbed, indie pubbed, or traditionally pubbed?

I am traditionally published through One Karma Publishing

What are your current projects?

I’m currently working on my new novel and also doing promotions and book signings for Just a Little Bit More an Erotic Elixir.

just a little bit more cover final

I soon branched off into writing novels and loved how I became the character. I would even find myself sipping wine and even wearing different hats or clothing to fit the scene. I would often challenge myself by finding more ways of turning things up a notch. I love to push the envelope.

The imagination allows you to escape into a world of fantasy and fulfill your inner most desires, before returning to reality. No judgment, no hold barred; just let it all go, giving you a little bit to touch taste feel and remember.

#WriterWednesday- Interview with Author Untamed!

I met Author Untamed during book signing at my local mall and had to introduce her to you. It’s always a pleasure to support my fellow authors!

Untamed author pic

Welcome, Untamed!

What inspired you to write?

I was given a poetry assignment in middle school and I found it as a great way to release my emotions. From writing poetry, I began to develop short stories and eventually novels.

What genre do you write? Did you choose it, or did it choose you?

I write a variation of urban fiction which at its core is urban however it has elements of comedy and what I’ve heard of as a “slice of life” or real-life genre. I also write dramas and erotica.  All of my writing chooses me. I always write what it’s in my heart and my characters tend to take a life of their own so I let them go wherever they choose.

What is your work schedule like when you’re writing?

Hectic! I usually write early in the morning or late at night.

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

My character’s voices. I tend to allow my characters to have very distinct personalities and speaking voices. I’ve found it helps the readers connect closer with the characters of their choice.

Are you a pantser or plotter?

As an author, I feel as though you have to be a little of both because you have to at least know what you’re going to write about and develop some characters, scenarios and plots, but stories do tend to deviate from the original plan. As for me, I think I’m more of a plotter and my characters are the pantsers lol! I have a vision and then they go wherever.

Are your stories based on experiences based on someone you know, or are events in your own life reflected in the characters/stories you write? Can you share and example?

For the series I have out now, it is a combination of my personal experiences, people I know and situations that you hear about from day to day. For example, my books Never Again…No More and Never Again…No More 2 are about ladies who were teen moms and I was a teen mom.  My other novels are strictly pieces from the crevices of the mind of Untamed.

Do you have any suggestions to help new authors become a better writer? If so, what are they?  Once you’ve written your masterpiece, edit, edit, edit then get someone to edit and then have another editor check your edits and your editor’s edits.

Are you self-pubbed, indie pubbed, or traditionally pubbed?

I am traditionally published through One Karma publishing.

What are your current projects?

Currently, I am editing the next book in my series.

#TeaserTuesday- Getting Ready for the First Date

I was watching TV, a pastime that has gone from pure entertainment to a study of television writers style of story telling. The episode of the show I was watching was entitled First Date. During the episode, the main character talked to her best friend about the nervous jitters she had in anticipation for the evening. It made me think back to a conversation held by Ebony Campbell and her best friend, Yasmine Phillips in A Heart Not Easily Broken.

Since when has it been simple for a woman to pick out clothing for a first date?

Excerpt:

“What does he like? You know, what has he commented on? What has his roving eye looked at when he’s not staring at you?”

“Um, his attention is always on me. Plus, he says I look good in anything, even my work clothes.”

“What the hell?” She rubbed her eyes. “Okay, he’s one of those.”

“One of what?”

“A man who’s always giving compliments to suck up.”

I loved Brian’s compliments. He never gave the impression of trying to get something in return. His facial expressions made it obvious that what he said came from the heart.

“Alright, what has he seen you in?” She eyed the clothes pile. “Jeans?”

“Not exactly, Capri’s, yes.”

“Dress?”

“That skin tight number the night we met.”

“Told you it would work.” She gave me a smug smile. “Shorts?”

“Yes, on Sunday, the day we kissed.”

“Hmm, how about this?”

I turned to see what she held. “Perfect.”

“Now for hair and make-up.”

At exactly two o’clock, the doorbell rang.

“I’ll get it,” Yasmine yelled from downstairs.

I finished tying the strings of my wedge heels around my legs and made sure I sprayed perfume in all the right places. I took a deep breath and stood in front of the mirror. Yasmine had a hidden talent for dressing people.

“Well hello, Brian, right? I’m Yasmine It’s nice to meet you.”

I could hear Yasmine’s voice floating up the steps.

“Hi, Yasmine. I’m here to pick up Ebony,” he replied.

God, I loved to hear him say my name.

“Sure, come in. She’ll be down in a minute.” The door closed. “Take care of my girl.”

“I will.”

When I heard her coming up the steps, I counted to ten and composed myself.

She stopped at my doorway and winked. “He’s a keeper. Nice lips.” She laughed and disappeared into her room.

Brian’s back was to me when I walked down the stairs. He appeared relaxed with his thumbs hooked in the pockets of his jeans. He had the same black sneakers and a deep blue shirt that was the same shade as his eyes. Blue was fast becoming my favorite color. His blond curls with dark undertones were shorter than when I last saw him.

“Hi,” I said upon reaching the bottom step.

He turned around and his eyes traveled over my outfit. “Damn.”

I wore a floral print halter-top accented with red lace trim that molded to my waist and breasts perfectly. The tan background complimented my skin and the floor-length skirt fit like a glove. A long, sexy slit ran from the hem to the middle of my thigh and gave him an eyeful every time I moved my leg.

“You look,” he cleared his throat, “amazing.”

#WriterWednesday- Interview with Tammie Clarke Gibbs!

Welcome! This week I introduce you to author, Tammie Clarke Gibbs who writes in several different genres. Grab a cup of coffee, pull up a chair and get a chance to know her!

Welcome, Tammie!

What inspired you to write?

I’ve always loved to read. When I was a junior in high school, I had one of those teachers who recognized something in my ability. I had a short story class and after my first story, my teacher was hooked and told me I’d “found what I should do with my life.” That was something heavy for a teenager to hear, but it was a turning point for me that changed the direction of my life.

What genre do you write? Did you choose it, or did it choose you?

My first three novels have all been romantic suspense, gothic and time travel.  I love all of those elements and enjoy writing them. My upcoming release will allow me to return to my roots. The first book in my Legends Series is a Paranormal Thriller that will have a love story, but isn’t a romance in the more traditional sense of the word.

What is your work schedule like when you’re writing?

I’m very entrepreneurial which means that I’ve owned several businesses. It’s helped me juggle multiple tasks and projects so when I sit down to write I usually write a few thousand words.  The challenge is balancing my full time real estate career with my full time writing career.

Are you a pantser or plotter?

Well, I plot for sometimes weeks just in my head, but then I’m pretty much a pantser. I call it “mulling it over and letting the story percolate”.

Are your stories based on experiences based on someone you know, or are events in your own life reflected in the characters/stories you write? Can you share an example?

My novels have been inspired by accounts in some family history books.

Do you have any suggestions to help new authors become a better writer? If so, what are they?

Write. The only way to improve your craft is to exercise it. Then once you feel that you have mastered it write some more and improve some more.

Are you self-pubbed, indie pubbed, or traditionally pubbed?

All three.

What are your current projects?

I touched on this above, but I’m really excited about the current work in progress.  Society of Blood: The Immortals, will allow me to write across the genres I love in a fresh new way.
