Milestone #10….October 15, 2013

Milestones.

I never gave deep thought to what this word means until my husband pointed it out.

In the past year of becoming a published author, I have reached more milestones than I could ever dream of.

First, being signed to 5 Prince Publishing in 2012, and not signing one book, but the entire six book Butterfly Memoirs Series! That still blows my mind…

When I started writing, I saw it as more of a hobby to keep my sanity and a much needed distraction from sitting in front of the TV playing The Sims until the kids came home. Hey, what can I say, I had fun giving my ‘characters’ lives I could control…well, control split with the computer program, that is. If you’ve ever played the game, you know what I mean. J

But with writing, there is another element of control that involves talent, creativity, and a tone of patience, perseverance, and determination. Oh yeah, and as every author knows, that so called ‘control’ over your imaginary characters gets lost from time to time when they come to ‘life’ and fight you and your Muse tooth and nail to write a story!

Other milestones reached include:

  • Earning the title of Bestselling Author in African American Literature & Romance, African American Women’s Fiction, African American Romance, and Multicultural and Interracial Romance (within hours of publication!) – debut novel, A Heart Not Easily Broken (September, 2012)
  • Publishing a second novel (because the first one wasn’t easy!!!) – Jaded (March, 2013)
  • Starting and hosting the Wordsmith Writers of Clayton County Writer’s Group which once meet at the Clayton County Headquarters Library, but has since moved to Barnes & Noble! (September 2012) I’ve had the privilege of meeting and working with wonderful talent from various stages of publication!
  • Being nominated by members of the Building Relationships Around Books (B.R.A.B) book club as Best New Author and Breakout Author (The winners have not been announced yet, but just being chosen along with the many other talented authors is a wonderful experience!)
  • Being selected as the Featured Author at the First Annual Author Workshop held by The Virtuous Women, LLC (August, 2013)
  • Speaking at the Jonesboro Library and hosting a workshop on How to Land a Publishing Contract. (August, 2013)
  • I’ve also had the opportunity to participate in a few phone interviews; the latest was with LaSheera Lee of Read You Later Blog Talk Radio. (September, 2013)

That is by no means all of them, but those are some of the most memorable ones by far. So what’s next?

The most recent milestone happened on October 15th, when I had the opportunity to be interviewed by DeKalb County Commissioner, Stan Watson, on his local program, The Stan Watson Show, which features people in the community from various walks of life, talent, and businesses. It was my first television appearance as a published author, and by far, very memorable!

Take a few minutes and watch the link. I’m the first interview (time stamp 5:20). There were some technical issues in the beginning, but they are quickly resolved. Enjoy! Also, check out the wonderful interviews that follow! I look forward to sharing more about their projects on my blog in the next few weeks.

M.J. Kane on The Stan Watson Show!

So, what’s up next on my ‘Milestone List?’

THE SORMAGE ONLINE CONFERENCE!!!

NOVEMBER 1-3, 2013

I’m excited to join other talented authors in two online panels on November 2nd: Social Media and Readers, and November 3rd: Marketing. Both are LIVE PHONE panels! If you haven’t registered for the conference, what are you waiting for???? REGISTER NOW!!! It’s FREE!!!!

And of course, my favorite project, LONELY HEART (BOOK 3 of THE BUTTERFLY MEMOIRS)!!!! The editing for this book is well underway. Release date is MARCH 6, 2014!!!! I love the way this story has turned out. The more I feel the characters as I edit, the more they come alive and their voices and stories are defined. I can promise you one thing; Kaitlyn’s story is NOTHING like the Ebony or Yasmine’s. Every woman has their own path in life, decisions that are made, and consequences to deal with. I look forward to sharing snippets with you as the edits are completed.

And since the contest I posted on Facebook the night of the interview did not go the way I thought it would due to the limited viewing area, I am going to hold another contest, another opportunity for TWO lucky winners to win an eBook copy of LONELY HEART the day it’s published! Entry is simple, just follow the instructions in the Rafflecopter link! The winner will be announced on November 1st!

FOLLOW THIS LINK TO THE LONELY HEART EBOOK GIVEAWAY!!!!

Good luck! And thanks to every one for your continued support! Without you guys, these MILESTONES would be unattainable dreams! ((HUGS)) and <3!!!!

Amazon Verified Purchase(What’s this?)

I first heard about M.J. and the Butterfly Memoirs series via Twitter, where I came across several positive reviews. I ran here to read what Amazon readers were saying and ordered both “A Heart Not Easily Broken” and “Jaded” that same day. When the books arrived, I eagerly began to read “A Heart Not Easily Broken.” To say I was hooked is an understatement. I loved the books, loved M. J.’s writing style, and now have a new favorite author.

I’ve read quite a number of novels in the IR genre over the years. My interest was primarily due to my own relationship, and the desire to see African-American women portrayed as appealing, interesting, sensual, fully-formed characters – women I could recognize and relate to, and with whom I could go on a journey as I read their stories. I wasn’t always able to find novels that embraced all those elements. However, M. J. hit all those notes, and made me care deeply about the characters. I recognized Ebony. I liked her very much. She was real to me. Her struggles were real. Her dreams and goals were real. Her insecurities were real. Her self-assessment was real.

M.J.’s characterization of Brian was also quite vivid and rooted in reality. He was a good guy. He wasn’t a billionaire whose money and lifestyle could erase any and all challenges the couple might face. He wasn’t Ebony’s “savior” – she could save herself. He was “simply” a good man, with dreams and goals of his own. One who could appreciate a beautiful woman – no matter the “outer” form. He just liked what he saw. But he was also a man who could appreciate a good woman – a man who wanted a partner, someone with whom he could grow – a woman willing to share her goals, and support him in his. And he was willing to do the same.

Ebony and Brian’s relationship flowed so organically – as other readers have mentioned. It wasn’t love at first sight. It was mutual appreciation, with a bit of lust (!) at first sight. Brian pursued her, to be sure, but they got to know each other slowly – in real time, it seemed. They didn’t rush. They continued to learn about about each other, and realized that the mix of similarities and differences made the other all the more appealing.

The “serious plot point” that I won’t spoil was handled deftly and realistically. One of the marks of a great writer is being able to take the reader completely into a particular “scene” or circumstance. Suffice it to say, M. J. is a great writer.

I could wax eloquent about this book for hours. I loved it so much, and it instantly became my standard against which I will assess all other IR romances. “Jaded”, the second book in the series, was another fantastic read, with richly drawn characters and some twists and turns I didn’t expect. The story truly pulled me in.

I was so glad I bought both books at the same time. I’m anxiously awaiting the 3rd book in this trilogy. Hurry up, M.J.! 🙂

It’s a Book-A-Versary!!!! An Interview with the Characters of A Heart Not Easily Broken

I can’t believe it! September 20th marked the one year anniversary of the release of my debut novel, A Heart Not Easily Broken!  While it is a celebration of my journey into the world of being a published author, it’s also the ‘day’ Ebony and Brian meet for the first time, thus…it’s their Book-A-Versary!!!

I managed to find time during both of their hectic schedules and mine, to sit down for a chat and find out where they are now in life. (And this, my friends, is why authors are often in need of strait jackets…)

MJ: Ebony, Brian, it is so good to see you again! How is life treating you?

Ebony: Very well, thank you.

Brian: Good, busy, and a hell of a lot of fun. (He grins)

MJ: I am so glad to hear that! So, congratulations and Happy Book-A-Versary! I can’t believe how fast time has flown by.

Ebony: And a lot has happened.

MJ: Yes it has. (I eye the shiny ring on her wedding finger). So, without giving away too much about your story, what can you tell me about your relationship now?

Brian: (Picks up Ebony’s hand and squeezes) There’s been a lot of good in our relationship, despite the fact we had a rough time, but we made it through. The support of our family and friends has made it easier.

Ebony: I agree. I can’t believe I ever doubted for a minute what my family would have to say about us. But above all, I have to say I appreciate Brian in ways I can’t even explain. One thing I’ve learned is to never second guess my feelings. If something is bothering me or I’m unsure, I communicate it to him and we work it out. Don’t get me wrong, we’re not perfect, neither is our relationship. We’ve just learned how to make it better.

Brian: And it just keeps getting better. (He lifts her hand and kisses it; Ebony blushes.)

MJ: I won’t take up too much of your time because I know you guys keep busy schedules. I do have some questions from readers who have been asking for months if it would be possible to get an update from you. Are you up to it?

Ebony: Sure!

MJ: Cool! Ebony, we’ll start with you. Readers would like to know how your families are getting along. Brian, we know your family loved Ebony from the beginning, but your family, Ebony, well, your sister to say the least, wasn’t too thrilled.

Ebony: (She laughs)  Lashana has slowly come around. Her biggest fear was whether I was thinking with my head or just looking for a thrill in trying something new. But now that she’s meet him, I think he’s growing on her.

Brian: I have that effect on people. (Ebony slaps his arm playfully)

Ebony: My brother, of course, is cool because come to find out, they have a lot in common. And my parents…they surprised me. They get along great with his family and love Brian to death. It seems as if I was the one who had the problem.

MJ: We all learn and grow. It sounds like you have done well. Next question, have you finished school?

Ebony: YES!!!! And yes, I do have the job!

MJ: Congratulations! Now of course, we know that you, Yasmine, and Kaitlyn are very good friends and have seen each other through a lot. With the change in your lives, have you been able to keep up with your Girls Night Out plans?

Ebony: Oh that is a good question. Yes and no. Each of our lives has taken a different path and the ease of being single and free is gone. We still talk by way of the phone and of course we’re always on Facebook, but the reality is we’ve had to grow up. We mostly do lunches and meet at the nail shop for mani and pedicures. (She looks at her nails), though why I bother I have no idea. But regardless, we’re always just a phone call away.

MJ: Yes, life does have a way of changing things for us. And it’s good to know your friendship is still strong. Now, Brian, the next question is for you. Have you been back on tour?

Brian: Thankfully, no. One thing I’ve learned to do is prioritize what is important in my life. I thought being on the road would be it, but it’s not. I try to stick closer to home, though my hours are still long. At least I know I’ll be home at night.

MJ: Well, that pretty much answers the next question; do you get home at respectable times?

Brian: Most nights, Ebony is asleep on the sofa waiting for me to come in the door. I can’t blame her thought, after she’s worked a long day, I’d never ask her to wait up. I try to make up for it as much as possible by planning late night dates or bring her roses.

Ebony: (She laughs)  I never need to waste money on buying Glade Plugins, that’s for sure. I have homemade potpourri everywhere!

MJ: Aww…that’s so sweet. So it sounds as if the classes you guys took helped?

Brian: Most definitely.

Ebony: Yes they did. If we hadn’t taken that step, I’m not sure where we’d be.

MJ: Okay, last question, I’ve been holding on to this one. How long will it be before you start a family of your own?

Ebony: Oh wow…

Brian: (Clears his throat)  To be honest, we haven’t exactly talked about it…

Ebony: With so much time spent working, it’s hard to enough to spend time together, much less raise a child.

MJ: Do you want one?

Ebony and Brian: Yes.

MJ: Then you will find a way to make it work. Well, that’s all the time I have for now. I’ve got writing to do and I’m sure you guys would like to spend your Sunday doing other things than talking to me. Until next time, take care!

#SampleSunday- Love, Trust, and Secrets

The reality of relationships is there will always be secrets. Sometimes it’s good to keep a secret, sometimes it isn’t. What happens when  the truth comes out? Can a couple who seem to have the perfect relationship find their way back to happiness after their ability to trust each another has been tested?

Some secrets are worse than infidelity…

Excerpt:

Why didn’t I think about this before?

I was so stupid.

I pushed the button on my phone and brought the screen saver to life. An image of our wedding day appeared. Zack stood behind me, his hands wrapped around my waist possessively. Smiles of contentment, love, and joy were on our faces.

Four days of wedded bliss felt as if it happened a million years ago.

How were we ever going to find that feeling again?

I said a brief prayer, then sent Zack another text apologizing and begging him to come home. The chances of him replying to the text were greater than expecting him to answer the phone.

After all, he wasn’t sure how he felt about me.

I had to remain positive. Negativity already permeated our relationship.

I had to believe he would forgive me. I had to believe my husband would return to me.

#8SundaySample- The Morning After

It seems I’ve been talking about sex a lot on my blog over the last few weeks, and with good reason. Those scenes can be the most fun to write! In fact, once I’ve gone through my process of outlining the story and developing the characters, it’s often the first scene that comes to mind…but not for the reason you my think.

Every love scene in my novels is there for a reason, and no, I don’t get carried away with adding them for the sake of  word count. When my characters take that step, its because something has changed between them, and that change moves the story forward. So of course the ‘morning after’ is just as important as the events that led up to a night of passion.

In Jaded, the first time the lead characters, Yasmine and Zachariah, come together, it is as friends…with benefits. Believe me, it’s not something either of them jump into, especially since both were left jaded and broken due to past relationships. After everything is said and done, Zachariah takes the time to study Yasmine as she sleeps, and discovers something about her that makes him see her once again in a whole new light….

Excerpt:

And damn, even her manicured toes were sexy.

Yasmine shifted in her sleep; the sigh of a satisfied lover escaped. Then her eyes opened and I knew exactly what captivated me.

It wasn’t the color or the sexy cat-like shape. It was the emotion, the soul hidden deep within the grey mist, hiding what she didn’t want the world to know. She used her mind, quick wit, and sexuality to hide her feelings.

I could see well beyond the sexy exterior, past the hurt, past the pain, and into the heart of who she truly was.

A woman who wanted to love – and be loved.

I Got Reviewed by The Masquerade Crew and Survived!!!!!!

Now, where is my t-shirt?!?!?!?!?

Okay, I am letting out a deep breath now. For weeks I’ve been anxiously checking my Twitter feed for the tweet to notify me the review for A Heart Not Easily Broken was posted. For those of you who may not know, The Masquerade Crew is one of the biggest book review sites on the web.

Big as in over 19,000 followers on Twitter, 452 followers on Google+, 859 likes on Facebook and oh yeah, according to the counter at the bottom of their page this morning, an average of over 16,800 site views in the past 7 days!

And when it comes to book reviews, these guys pull no punches and are brutally honest. So, needless to say, responding to a call of Romance novels to be reviewed was a leap of faith.  I had to sit and think long and hard before submitting my debut novel, not sure of how this could either help or hurt me, because in the end, like I mentioned before, see the number of social networking contacts? Yeah…one bad review and there’d be no hiding it….period.

Well, I awoke this morning and discovered this tweet in my Twitter stream….

IMG_0757[1]

3.7?!?!?!?!

I am going to OWN THAT BAD BOY LIKE YOU WOULDN’T BELIEVE!!!!

Like I said before, these guys don’t hold back and from what I’ve seen, it’s hard to get past a 3 on their rating scale, and according to their review policy, a 3.5 and up is a 4 on Amazon and Goodreads! So best believe, I am doing the happy dance right now!!

I loved the way the reviewer described what she liked about the main characters, Ebony and Brian, and how she felt the subject matter was handled. The portions she did mention could use a little fixing are nothing new, as in a few reviewers have said it before. Remember when I posted a few weeks ago about learning from your reviews (Book Reviews: The Good, The Bad and the WTH?!?!)? Well, trust me, the comments that were made have been addressed when writing the second novel in the series, Jaded. I haven’t seen similar comments made in any of it’s reviews which is a good thing! I listen to what my reviews are telling me, and while I may not be able to back track and change what’s already been done, I do make a contentious effort to correct it in the next book. As any author I’ve talked to and I’m sure any author will tell you, each book is a learning experience, a chance to become a better writer than you were in the last one. Listen to your reviewers, listen to your readers, and grow…your audience and fan base will grow with you.

So with that said, I say a very heartfelt THANK YOU to my reviewer over at The Masquerade Crew for giving  my DEBUT NOVEL, first book written EVER such an awesome review! Stop by and check it out, my friends!

#SampleSunday- A Heart Not Easily Broken- The Deleted Scene

Just like in the movies, books often have deleted scenes. Sometimes, no matter how much we love what we’ve written, an author is forced, (and I do mean forced!) to remove it for the sake of slowing the story down or telling too much information at the wrong time. One of my favorite deleted scenes is from Brian’s POV, and takes place before the start of Chapter One, the scene where Ebony notices Brian watching her from the stage. Chapter One tells you how Ebony saw that moment.

Have you ever wondered what Brian was thinking while watching her dance in the crowd?

Now’s your chance to find out! This scene is normally hidden in the links for Brian’s Musings, but I decided today would be a great day to share. Enjoy!

Deleted Scene:

“Yo, Brian, where are you going, man? We don’t have a long break.”

I turned to face Derrick, Diverse Nation’s drummer, and my friend since college. “Did you see her? The woman in the little black dress?” My attention went back to the crowded dance floor. Even though we’d stopped playing, it was still packed. Bodies gyrating to the DJ’s choice of music continued to block my view.

“You’re kidding, right?”

I shot Derrick a momentary glance as I lifted the strap of my guitar from around my neck. I knew where this was about to go. Irritation flooded me.

“You’re talking about the black woman, right?” Derrick continued.

“Yeah. What’s your point?” I turned my back on him and focused on the dance floor. Which way did she go?

As if the heavens heard my question, strobe lights shot out into the club as the DJ shouted out the crowd, illuminating the woman who’d stolen my attention.

Long dark wavy hair rested on bare shoulders of a caramel body wrapped in a sheath of black.  The fabric clung to every curve of her voluptuous figure, wearing it like a second skin. The material stopped just below her hips; shapely thighs and amazing calves ended in a pair of open-toe heels.

My body’s response was automatic.

“Brian, man, don’t go there. I’m in no mood to stop a fight tonight.”

I locked on my target. “What are you talking about?”

“I’m talking about every last brother on the floor that’s jockin’ her. You make a move and someone’s gonna step to you and put you in your place.” Derrick blocked my path to the steps leading down from the stage, his hand resting on my shoulder. “I’ve got plans with my lady tonight. Spending the night in jail for keepin’ your ass out of trouble isn’t in the cards.”

My fist balled. I was sick and tired of everything coming down to race. Just because I was missing melanin in my skin didn’t mean I had no right to talk to a woman I was attracted to.

I shrugged off his grip and headed down the steps leading to the dance floor. My intention; follow the footsteps of the caramel vixen.

“I could care less about what anyone thinks, D. I can handle my own. I want her. Before the end of the night, she will be mine.”
